Les Voiles de Saint Tropez, 26 September to 4 October
9 out of 40

Another great week in St Tropez. Medium to light wind, warm and sunny weather, high level competitors. We experienced a new code 0 (with many troubles to furl it) and some changes in crew position (Dani as tactician except on Saturday) but for sure the top five boats are at a higher level than we are and it ended with a 9th place. We still have to practice!

IRC Med Challenge - Barcelona, 7 / 13 September
6 out of 8

Maluba, as well as her teammates Albacor and Kaya, had very disappointing results to end 7th out of 8 team. The light breeze and choppy see were not what fit this boats the best. Anyway, we must work more to improve our performances. Everybodu enjoyed this week in Barcelona. UNCL and RCNB have done a great job ashore and on the water and we all look forward to coming back in 2011.

17 out of 84

As usual, Saint Tropez is a wonderful place to stay. Rolex inshore series is an untypical race with 84 boats on the start line (a lot for this short line), ranking from X35 to TP52 (impossible to control other boats). So, of course, the results depend a lot on the weather, with an edge for the big boats which may sail in clearer air. Due to the "crowd", there are only coastal races there, one per day, instead of windward / leeward courses, with some boring reaching legs that help good reaching boats. Light wind between 0 and 8 knots the two first days and champagne sailing with 15 to 20 knots on the final day. Finishing 17 is far from perfect but in such a fleet it is not that bad with only 1 or 2 smaller ratings ahead but many Swan's. The strange thing is that Swan 45's had a separate start but were classified with the other IRC class 1! Not really fair, isn't it? We mixed the worst - poor starts, very bad tactics on the first day - and good things such as speed improvement in very light conditions. We didn't enter the Giraglia (had to go back to the office) so now, it is time for Summer holidays. Next step in September

1 out of 14

Grand slam for Maluba with 6 bullets in 6 races. Wonderful conditions with a perfect sun and winds between 15 and 25 knots. For sure this KER 39 is extremely fast in medium and stronger conditions. Tactics were clear with the left side of the course to protect and the Arya 415 "White Goose" helmed by Mauro Peleschier to keep an eye to. We are delightful with this incredible series of wins. Once more the helmsmen, Luigi and Dani shared the helm, made a great job as well as the rest of the crew. We are much more confident than before when it blows even if we still miss practicing in more than 25 knots. Last but not least, we enjoyed excellent restaurants and a great party at the Ycht Club Punta Ala.

Semaine de Porquerolles, 20 to 24 May
3 out of 19

SIMPLY GORGEOUS! Porquerolles is one the nicest island I know. The race comitee was definitly perfect (after a long coastal race, we had two windward leeward races in about 20 knots). The sun always shines there and after a light first day, the wind built up to 15 to 20 knots for the next days. In IRC class 1, the level of the competitors was pretty high, both boats - TP52, GP42, X41, GS50, Swan 42, Swan 45 - and crews - Mouren, Pace, Brenac, Pailloux and others. We also had a lot of fun ashore. Maluba's crew made a very good job to make good manoeuvres and get the speed. We are really happy with our third behind the TP52 Paprec and the GP42 Nearmiss and in front of all the "classic" IRC cruiser/racer. We are looking forward to coming back next year.

11 out of 24

The place is one of the nicest, the parties are great and the fleet is astonishing with Ran, Luna Rossa, Allegre and many other incredible boats. After a 5th and a 4th, we were again in the top pack in the last race when we had contact with a X50. We had to retire and protest. Despite being leeward, we had the bad surprise to be disqualified by the jury and missed the promised pdium.

T.A.N. - Livorno, 23 to 26 April
3 out of 21

Again strong competitors with two Aryas 415, X41's (one with F. de Angelis calling the shots) and many others. Consistant sailing, including a 1st and a 3rd, lead us to another podium.

3 out of 15

Happy to be back there for Easter. A strong opposition with the new Arya 415 "White Goose" helmed by Mauro Pelaschier. We finished 5th and 4th in the light and tricky winds of the first and last days. But we won in the medium wind to end 3rd.

Ar Men - Saint Tropez, 7/8, 14/15 March
DNF out of 16

After the two costal races of the first week-end - Saint Tropez to Cavalaire and Cavalaire to Saint Tropez - Maluba has been damaged in Saint Tropez harbour by another boat suffering mooring trouble during a night gale. So we had to retire and bring the Ker 39 to Antibes to be fixed on time to be delivered to Italy for the next races

1 out of 10

A good week-end in Saint Tropez. A small local fleet of 10 boats but some good competitors: Dehler 44, Salona 42R, J122, First 44.7 and 40.7, Mumm 36. About 15 knots of East wind and blue sky on Saturday. Grey sky and light East to North-East on Sunday. 2 windward/leeward races each day. 3 first and a fourth ended in the first win of the year. We hope it won't be the last!

Winter Series - San Remo, 17/18, 31 January - 1 February

17 / 18 : ooops. Not so easy to sail in 15 to 25 knots right after Christmas and New year parties! This first sailing week-end of 2009 has been a little bit disappointing. Some problems on Saturday with a 7th and a DNF on Sunday due to a broken pole further to a messy gybe. Fortunately, the boat is always very fast both upwind and downwind. Let see what will happen next time. 24 / 25 : 15 knots and a good job of the crew but a poor tactic ended in a 7th. On Sunday, we forgot the race and delivered the boat to Nice. As expected, these two week-ends were a very good practise for everybody.

2008

2 out of 14

The last race of the year. We again sailed in light winds! We finished second to a Farr 40 but ahead of IMX 40 and 45, Sly 42, J 122, First 40.7 and 44.7, Mumm 36 etc. We have improved our skills to manage with the Ker 39 during this first season and will practise during Winter to be ready for 2009.

Les voiles de Saint Tropez, 28th September - 5th October
6 out of 42

After seven years competing in the green class with the IMX 40, rewarded with 3 second places and one win in 2006, we entered the white class for the first time. This class was the strongest with 42 boats and 10 countries, amongst them many Swan 42’s and 45’s including Earlybird the 2008 world champion, the Mills 41’ Gnoni (former Tiamat) recent winner of the Copa del Rey, Mat 12 the Turkish series built Mills 41’, Cachou the brand new Sly 42’, the IMX 45’ Follow me and many others. The level of the crews was very high with many professionals and former America’s cup / Olympic sailors. The Ker 39 was one of the smallest ratings of the class which is quite different from what we were used to. Tactic is not the same! We have been very lucky with the weather during this week: blue sky, winds mainly between 10 and 20 knots though lighter on Tuesday. Unfortunately, it was too strong for racing on Friday, but we did practise and had fun. The courses were not too bad, with less boring reaching legs than some other years. We suffered during the first two races, being not consistent enough for such tough competitors : Monday we lost at least 4 places - to finish 9th - because of a big mistake when we hoisted the spinnaker and Tuesday we have not been able to recover after a bad first beat upwind. But we were more in the mood during the next two races, with a first and a third. It is still far from perfect but we were very happy with the speed of the boat and are looking forward to the next races. The final result is 6th overall, the winner being Ngoni which was a step ahead of the fleet. If was very tight behind her, with 5 boats in 5 points, and six different countries in the top six!

Challenge Freulon - Mandelieu, 13th and 14th September

Two days racing in the bay of Cannes. A really good training with winds from 8 to 20 knots and a choppy sea.

2 out of 11

The first race under HN ranking system. Wonderful condition with wind starting at 8 knots to build up to 20 knots and a perfect sun shine. Maluba seems to be at his best in these conditions. Good job of the crew and Maluba was the first monohull to finish. A second place on corrected time, despite a horrible rating, is another good result for the team

This year, we entered the Golden Trophy IRC championship in Marciana Marina, Elba Island for the first time. Story by Stefano : First of all, thanks to Luigi and Marisa for the perfect orgnization as usual. The restaurants were great (those who left on Saturday afternoon really missed something - dinner at "Scarabocci"). The hotel was really nice and in a perfect location close to the harbour. Concerning the rest: Positive 1) I feel that we really improved the way to set the boat in light wind.... even if, anyway, this boat remains a boat for medium to strong wind. But in comparison with Santa Margherita and Accademia (specially the 2nd race of the first day) we were much more competitive in very light wind (always below 6 knots!!!!). 2) I feel that the atmosphere on board and ashore was great, even taking into account the newcomers (Roberto and Moreno). Given the poor wind condition, it was not that easy to maintain a good atmosphere.... 3) I feel that Roberto Spata really brought us some extra setting knowledge. Thanks! Negative 1) THE WIND..... always below 6 knots, difficult to have worst than this 2) The result, 11th out of 21 boatS. As Luigi said, unlikely in 1 year from now, only the result will remain in the memory but we honestly know that from a sport point of view, we are worth better than this result. The races 1) First race (Costal): reaching for 13 miles with wind below 6 knots; no special comments; just not enough speed compared to the others..... The new jib top is much more efficent than the old one even if it 'll be even better value for money in stronger winds. 2) 1st Banana race (never finished): really good start on the pin. 20/25 deg on the left... Nice speed test with Giumat (Dufour 44) upwind and good speed test with Rodman 42 downwind. 1st in corrected time at the first downwind mark where everybody thought we should have a shorten race... unlikely the race committee was not thinking the same way. So the race was abandonned later on due to time limit....... 3) 2nd Banana race : good start in the wrong place (at the pin end with a 75 deg shift to the right......) but no possibility to play with the other. That's all folks

Back for the first time in Punta Ala since 2002, we specially enjoyed this week. After the first two regattas in Livorno and Santa Margherita, we kept on learning how to sail the brand new Ker 39. We had a few changes in the crew positions with Thierry as a pitman and were very happy with the result. On the water, for the third time in a row this season, we had light wind races - from 6 to 13 knots. At the moment we have more pace in top wind range so we still have to improve in lighter conditions (even if it is getting better thanks to Ricca). We are really satisfied with the 3rd place behind a Rodman 42 and X-41 in this really strong fleet.
See the complete results here.

A frustrating "extra light wind" regatta! 3 windward/leeward races and a 60m coastal race in less than 7 knots which ended with a fourth place in IRC 1, which is maybe the worst of all. Difficult to find pace but we improved in boat handling and tuning. At least the Italian coast remains a fantastic place as well as the competitors are gorgeous boats from Alfa Romeo to GP42's... Anyway, we are now really looking forward to entering the next regatta in Punta Ala in June.

Trofeo Accademia - Livorno, 25 to 27 April
1 out of 12

First regatta, first win! Luigi and the Maluba sailing team are delighted. Now we know it was worth waiting for this Ker 39 delivery for so long. We had 3 windward/leeward races in light wind up to about 12 knots and one 28 miles coastal race in medium conditions, up to more than 15 knots. We had to fight vs 3 X-41's, 2 Sly 42's, 1 Swan 45, 1 Vismara 46, 1 Cookson 40 etc... to finally lead IRC class 1. We still have a lot to learn about the way this boat needs to be sailed so we can get the best of her, and are looking forward to racing Trofeo Pirelli in Santa Margherita in a few days.

Les voiles de Saint Tropez, 30 September / 7 October
18 out of 43

The one and only race for the Maluba Sailing Team this year due to late delivery of the new Maluba (expected by the end of 2007). This week has been made possible with the help of Jacques Bureau who allowed us to use his own X-35 "Narda".The result is not exactly what was expected after many years in the top 3 and the 2006 win, but we had a lot of fun and we learnt a lot on the way to sail non overlapping jib in light wind. We struggled with some tactical mistakes and a lack of speed but we improved during the week even we have never been able to manage with the First 40.7 and A35 when reaching. It was great to race with the Maluba Sailing Team for the first time this year and we really enjoyed this week in together St Tropez. As usual, we were located in port Grimaud whith the boat in front of the house : wonderful. We also enjoyed great dinners at "La Ponche" and "La Verdoyante".

One week of inshore races with magnificient boats such as Maricha and Alfa-romeo. A very welcome win after being second in 2004 and 2005. Very consistant sailing (4th, 1st, 2nd, 3rd) in winds from 10 to 25 knots.
